A member asked:

Does a normal esr/sedimentation rate rule out malignancy/tumor growth?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: ESR is not a rule in or rule out test. Meaning that having a high or low ESR does not mean it alone means anything for certain. It basically tests inflammation in the body. Sometimes tumor and malignancy cause inflammation, some other malignancies/tumors do not.. Theses tests are not used to say you DO or DO NOT have a malignancy or tumor growing in your body.
