It's worth trying: Once arthritis becomes chronic and actual structural damage has been done to the joints, you can still arrest or slow its advance, but a return to pre-disease state is not in the cards. But, caught early, yes - you can perhaps even recover some or all function. In any case - doing the right stuff is smart. Work w/ your medical team. Seek guided exercise, diet and quality of life. A few options: Strengthening the muscles around the hip will help a lot. You may want to consider some supplements like glucosamine, however recent research hasn't shown a lot of benefit. Other options include steroid injections, but these don't heal much. You can consider Synvisc (hylan g-f 20) or other joint fluid replacement injections and possible even platelet therapy injections or stem cell procedures.

Manage OA: OA will never go away, but you can slow its progression. Progression of OA can be generally minimized by losing weight, performing light weight training and low impact cardiovascular exercise (elliptical, exercise bike, swimming). Glucosamine and chondroitin supplementation can help to rebuild lost cartilage as well.
