Lots of progress.: There has ben a great deal of work in the research for a better and safer psychotropic drugs for the treatment of mental illness however, Prozac (fluoxetine) is still the gold standard for the treatment of depression, Lithium for mood stabilization and Clozaril for psychotic disorders. There is a lot more choices for the treatment of mental illness. The anticonvulsants are also used for mood stabilization.

Glutamate : The latest are glutamate antagonists like lamictal, ketamine, Namenda. Also serotonin modulators like viibryd (vilazodone hydrochloride) and brintellex which adds specificity to where neurotransmitters are affected eg causing dopamine to be released in frontal cortex. New meds are designed by informed knowledge rather than chance.
