Spine Pain workup: Electrodiagnostic testing (nerve conduction studies (NCS) and needle EMG) is performed to diagnose if pain, numbness, or weakness in the limbs (arms and/or legs) are due to nerve problems. Upper back and neck pain are NOT usually caused by pinched nerves and an EMG/NCS is not usually performed for this problem. Shoulder pain can have many causes unrelated to neck or back issues.
