Several years: The general feeling is that the cause for hives can only be uncovered in less than 20% of the cases at the most although 30% of the cases are considered autoimmune in nature. The average duration is several years but varies among patients and dependent on the cause. Allergy testing is usually not helpful. The good news: Most can be controlled with antihistamine which may be taken up to 4x/day.
