A member asked:

Is it common in pregnancy to have constipation? sorry if im saying this . when i pass motion i saw a blood and pain. (hard stool) does it effect baby?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes and no: Yes, constipation is one of the joys of pregnancy. In early pregnancy, the hormones slow the bowel down. In later pregnancy, a combination of increased fluid requirements and having a mass in your belly (the pregnant uterus) is the culprit. In both cases, pushing fluids, water mainly, is key. A finer-type laxative will help hold the water in the stool. Finally, no, this does not hurt the baby.
