Atrophy/scar: the recurrent infections leads to scar that replaces viable tissue in the organ . It atrophies (shrinks) and becomes under active. The pt may actually have a bout of pancreatitis but the labs will be normal cause the organ cant even generate the usual rise in enzymes. Also know as a "burnt out " pancreas. Needless to say it is not good and indicates end stage disease.
