Referred pain: Interesting question. You could be having referred pian from an esophageal problem like reflux. Talk to your primary care physician and get a referral to a gastroenterologist.

You do not specify : What part of you back is hurting when you swallow? If this is your middle back, it might be esophageal problem. If it lasts only for a short while, it might be esophageal spasm. If it last longer and repeats every time when you eat and drink, you need to see a doctor and might need endoscopy to rule out esophageal inflammation or esophageal ulcer.
