Vaccine: The Tdap has tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria protection, but the Td has tetanus and diphtheria protection only. Tetanus and diphtheria boosters are recommended every 8-10 years ( overlap is ok) to prevent tetanus infections. Tdap is recommended to decrease pertussis infection in the community, esp for new parents so they cannot pass pertussis to their children.

More modern vaccine: The TdaP in the more recent booster approved for older kids and adults. It has the acellular pertussis vaccine along with diphtheria & tetanus boosters. Before the aP vaccine, the old whole cell pertussis vaccine was so harsh we couldn't give it to kids > 6 & most teens & adults became vulnerable to get and pass infection. The milder aP is a better choice to stop the spread of pertussis.
