Filled with fluid?: asthma is an inflammatory issue - but if she has never been told asthmatic unusual to diagnose at one visit. Why do you think they were filled with fluid for 4 mo? Cough alone can be from reflux, post-nasal drip, virus, allergies, pneumonia, cardiac reasons - and asthma - and many other reasons. So why the question about fluid for 4 mo? Did someone say she had fluid?

Yes, but depends...: The accumulation of fluid in lungs causes inflammation, producing symptoms like cough, breathing difficulties, wheezing. If left untreated for long, this can cause scaring. However, the degree of injury depends on the cause, fluid type, extension, and if left inside of lungs (pulmonary edema) or around the lungs (pleural effusion). The good news is that young lungs can recover fast with treatment.
