Develop immunity: Before comparing one test to another, make sure that you are comparing apples-to-apples. Make sure the test is the same test at the same lab. Second make sure that they are measuring the same strain of HSV, since there is HSV1 and HSV2. In any case, IgM is the antibody you get right after an infection and is relatively short lasting - after that IgG increases and is long lasting

Infection: You most likely have a recent or reactivated HSV 1 infection. You may want to consider getting a PCR DNA test on a sample to confirm your diagnosis. Do you have symptoms? Are you on an antiviral medication?

Acute infection: A rise in IgM antibody against a particular antigen gen indicates either an acute infection or reinfection. One can consider more reliable testing for HSV than antibody testing, e.g. PCR or culture, in light of a chronic history for a better long term follow up and disease management.
