A member asked:

I was diagnosed with a pinched nerve in the neck. if my arms are raised up high i don't have a pulse in the wrist or neck. what causes this?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Herniated disc: When your arms are raised the carotid artery (pulse in the neck) is more difficult to find because it rotates behind the neck muscles (sternocleidomastoid). Elevating the arms above the head makes the pulse weaker in the hands because the blood has to travel higher above the heart and this creates a larger pressure gradient. This is a normal physiologic response and not to worry.
