MRI needed: Cracking joints is usually just from air getting into the joint and is harmless. However if there is pain associated and you had a previous injury then a MRI may better explain the reason. There may be damaged cartilage that can't be seen on a X-ray.

See a physician: It may be the sequela of one of those bad sprains or what could have even been a fracture. See a specialist of the ankle for x-rays and examination.
