Sign of inflammation: Some blood on your toothbrush is nothing to panic about. It does indicate inflammation of the gums. At your age this is likely gingivitis. A good professional cleaning, good brushing and flossing technique, and some Listerine will usually do the trick. A visit to your friendly neighborhood dental hygienist is a good place to start.

Gingivitis: Bleeding gums are indication of gingivitis or perhaps a more serious gum disease. A visit to your dentist and a thorough evaluation is a start.

Not normal: It is of concern, but not an emergency. Bleeding indicates inflamed (infected) gum tissues. Please see your Dentist for an evaluation. You may need a thorough cleaning by your Dentist or his hygienist, coupled with a reevaluation of your daily oral hygiene routine. If gums more seriously infected, services of a gum/bone specialist, a Periodontist, may be in order.

Not normal to bleed: Bleeding from the gums is not a normal condition. This can be indicative of gingivitis or periodontitis. Gingivitis (gum inflammation) is reversible but periodontitis (gum disease with bone loss) is not. Periodontitis is a leading cause of tooth loss. I would recommend seeing your dentist as soon as possible.

See a dentist ASAP: Bleeding can be a sign that you are at risk for, or already have, advanced gum disease. Untreated gingivitis or tooth infection can lead to the tooth loss and other health problems. See your dentist ASAP because the sooner you treat it the better the outcome.
