A member asked:

My mom is 61yo and is in the hospital and they say her tsh is very high. gave her iv synthroid (thyroxine). doing thyroid us. why all of a sudden? never been high

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Can come on fast: Severe hypothyroidism can sneak up on a person in a few weeks from DeQuervain's or an exacerbation of Hashimoto's when the last of the overworked functioning thyroid is suddenly gone. In this situation, it's often wise to check for Addison's as well.
