Sprain?: Pain in the left side of the ribs can be caused by straining or spraining the ribs. This can happen from falling or even sneezing/coughing. This pain could also indicate a problem in the chest cavity such as pleurisy or pneumonia. To treat a sprain - anti-inflammatories and time (sometimes 4 weeks). If you have fever and cough - see your PCP.

Chest: Costochonditis is a disorder related to a type of inflammation of the sternum and rib joint area that is inflammed. This can get worse at times but any pain chest area if you have risk factors for heart disease could be serious and you should see your doctor

Pleuritis/chondritis: Sounds like pleurisy which is an inflammation on the lining of your lungs. Actually quite common and caused by various infections or inflammation triggers. Typically antiinflammatories (aspirin, naproxen, etc) that are over the counter are helpful. In some people it can be more serious so if it is persistent or not helped by over the counter pain relievers, seek help.
