Many things: Stools that float can mean many different things but most of the time are indicative of malabsorption of some nutrients or fat. Sometimes, abdominal pain in concert with floating stools can signify a problem with your pancreas or gallbladder. See your doctor for a proper evaluation.

Abdominal pain: Steatorrhea is the symptom of having fatty foul smelling stools. Dysfunction of the gallbladder or pancreas can cause steatorrhea along with abdominal pain and bloating. Primary abnormalities of the stomach or large bowel are less commonly the cause. Evaluation of the GI tract can include ultrasound of the gallbladder, serum evaluation, stool samples, and possibly endoscopy.
