Start simple: Sciatic/back pain has many possible causes. The most common is musle/joint related. So, it is good to stretch your back gently and exercise your back muscles every day. When you are in the midst of a particularly bad attack, consider a hot bath/jacuzzi and massage therapy. If this doesn't help, see a doctor.

Sit down: Only for 2hrs or less. Take frequency breaks throughout the day where you stand or take a walk. This allows less stress on the herniated disc that may be pushing on a nerve.
