Doctors, what is the difference between insulin regular and insulin nph?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Time course: Hi. NPH & R differ by their time course of action. While they are both now mostly relegated to the history books, some people still use them. R peaks sooner and lasts a shorter time than NPH. Engineered insulins (e.g., Lantus (insulin glargine) vs. Humalog or Novolog) also differ in the time course of action. This gives rise to the notion of "basal" insulin and "meal" insulin. Different insulins fulfill diff. needs.
