Several risks.: Deep venous thrombosis has two primary risks: acutely , pulmonary embolism (clot in the lung), and over time, chronic venous insufficiency which is characterized by leg swelling, discoloration of the lower leg and possible ulcer formation. Pulmonary embolism could be fatal and Chronic Venous Insufficiency has many bad side effects. These are reasons to aggressively treat DVT.
