Hives: Acute urticaria, or hives, often occur and disappear before we figure out cause. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Zyrtec (longer acting and less sedating) are otc antihistamines that may help for acute hives. If they recur after swimming, then chronic cold-induced urticaria is a consideration and can be diagnosed in the office with a simple test. This can be serious as swimming can cause shock/death in such cases
