Try getting x-ray: first to rule out a fracture or dislocation first. They are cheaper and more readily available. If it is negative and you are still feeling that your joint is not the same and maybe unstable due to soft tissue damage, getting a good physical evaluation from an orthopedist or physiatrist may help in deciding the next step you should take. Whether to get an MRI or not.

If it swells, yes: Pain and swelling usually means structural issues- see a specialist and possibly get and MRI if they need it. For some injuries, timing of treatment is important
