A member asked:

Is it possible to stop taking venlafaxine?

7 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Yes: Any drug can be stopped. Some drugs, like narcotics cause physical and psychological dependance and may need to be gradually withdrawn or stopped under strict medical suoervision. Other meds, like venlafaxin and some blood pressure pills may need to be stopped slowly to prevent sudden recurrance of symtoms. Many drugs can be stopped and restarted as needed. Ask your doctor for more specific detail.

Of course!: Venlafaxine (effexor) is an antidepressant/anti anxiety medication that is non-addictive and not habit-forming. Thus, it is absolutely possible to stop taking it. However, I have had many patients suffer "withdraw" symptoms (mild headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue) for a few days to several weeks after stopping it. Therefore, it's advisable to taper off instead--the slower the better.
