After: Recommend getting the pain under control, if not resolved prior to starting to exercise. Sometimes exercise can make the pain worse while you have it. I definitely would work on core strengthening, stomach, back, hips, glutes and stretching of the hamstrings as this will help prevent recurrence. Then, slowly get back to aerobic activity, lower impact is better and progress as tolerated.
