College, and the main differences between a degree in dentistry and orthodontics?

Specialty training: When a dentist graduates from dental school, they are a general dentist. In order to be an orthodontist, the dentist goes back to school and completes additional training in orthodontics.

Dental before Ortho: After college, orthodontists must first complete a 4 year degree in an accredited year dental school. They would then apply to residency in orthodontics which generally is a 3 year program which includes masters degree.

2-3 additional yrs: Most dental school applicants receive a bachelors degree prior to entering dental school. Dental school is an additional 4 years of training after undergraduate college. If they decide to specialize in orthodontics, they apply for a masters beyond their doctorate in a school/residency. It is usually 3 additional years but some schools have a 2 year program. A total of 11 years in school!

Additional training: Orthodontists are dentists that have completed a residency in orthodontics after completing dental school. The have earned an master's degree when they are finished.

2 years.: A degree in dentistry usually takes 8 years, 4 years of undergraduate study in biology and or chemistry with a bachelor degree, then on to dental school for 4 more years for your dds. Following graduation from dental school you have 2 more years of graduate school to specialize in orthodontics.

Education: After 4 years of college one can apply to a dental school. Dental school is 4 years . Some states require a additional one year residency before going out and practicing . To become a orthodontist is 2 more years. Some schools offer a combined college and dental degree taking 6 years. All of those years go so fast so don't let time scare you. If you have a passion to be a dentist-go for it !

Extra education: It is a specialty of dentistry that requires additional years of training and education, like endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery.

DDS first then a MS: A degree in dentistry is usually a dds or a dmd. They are the same thing. Post doc edu.: Orthodontics is a specialty in dentistry. You complete dental school and then enter a post doctoral training program for orthodontics.

Get ready for DEBT: An orthodontist is a dentist who has spent a likely 3 year residency after 4 years of dental school (i believe 1 school is 3 years u of pacific). So 4+4+3=11 in most situations. Depending upon where you go, and what scholarship monies are available, the debt incurred can be significant indeed! not to be discouraging, it is a wonderful profession, but costly to obtain the rights. Although many Dentists do some Orthodontic treatment, studies have shown that specialists do it faster and better. All physicians can set a broken bone, but I would want an Orthopedic Surgical Specialist to do it.

BA, DDS and then ...: As an undergrad, focusing on sciences will be key in helping you with your application to dental school. All orthodontists are dentists first. Be aware that only the top of dental school class graduates get into ortho programs as they tend to be the most competitive. typically most ortho programs require 2-3 years after dental school. so yes, its a long haul-- but worth it!
