Barium Sulfate: Barium Sulfate is added to gutta percha as a radiocontrast agent for x-ray imaging. Gutta percha has been used for many, many years on millions of root canal treatments without consequence. It is unfortunate that you had a reaction.. I hope that you are better now that the material or tooth has been removed. All the best...

It is up to you: Historically, the safety of endodontics has always been debated. Gutta-percha has been the most widely used root canal filling material. Despite some research about the problems with root canal sealers most of dental care providers prefer to save teeth rather than extract them and place dental implants. It is your choice to get a root canal with "toxic" materials or loose your tooth.
