Not necessarily.: The throat swab can detect bacterial infections, but if positive it does not mean that you need antibiotics. If the cutlure is 'contaminated' then it may grow multiple organisms but in that case you may not need antibiotics. If it grows Group A Strep then you will likely needs a course of treatment. Also make sure to continue supportive care for your symptoms (tylenol, salt water gargles, etc)
