Prostaglandins: When you do not become pregnant, you do not need the lining of your uterus that month. A substance in the body, called prostaglandins, causes the uterus to contract, to expel the lining. Prostaglandins cause inflammation and pain, which is what you feel as menstrual cramps.

Prostaglandins: Blood and tissue passing through the cervix causes cramping, as does the prostaglandins that are elevated during menstruation. Ibuprofen is an anti-prostaglandin and is the best medication for cramping. Be sure to take 600 or 800 mg in order to ensure you are getting adequate treatment.
