Exposure/no antibody: Many mothers delivering today had their last whooping cough vaccine as a kid and will not have any remaining antibody to pass to their newborn. Recently,OBs have started giving the TdaP to pregnant women to help avoid this.The vaccine is not effective if given before 6 wks, so the newest babies are vulnerable if exposed. This germ can pass from infected people before they realize they are ill.
