A member asked:

Can you tell me how iodine- 123 diagnose adrenal dysfunction?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It doesn't: Hi. 123-I-MIBG scan does NOT diagnose adrenal dysfunction. It is a localization tool to localize pheochromocytoma, a tumor of the adrenal medulla. Pheochromocytoma is confirmed biochemically BEFORE the MIBG scan is done. The MIBG just helps localize the tumor for purposes of surgical resection.131-I-MIBG is used sometimes to try to kill non-surgical pheochromcytoma. I hope that helps.
