See below: transrectal ultrasound is often used to look at the prostate gland for the size and signs of cancer. a probe is placed through the anus into the rectum to look at the prostate gland that is next to the rectum.

2nd hand impression:: There seems to be a rather mild degree of discomfort on insertion of the probe. Depending on the size of the prostate there may be mild discomfort as the probe is manipulated during the exam. I would say a more intense version of a digital (finger) exam of the prostate.
