Prolactin elevation: Hi. Prolactin (PRL) elevation is usually due to a benign tumor in the pituitary, although some drugs can cause PRL elevation too. Elevated PRL is associated with breast milk production and turning off periods. Generally PRL elevation is treated with a pill that mimics the neurotransmitter, dopamine (drug is called cabergoline; less likely, bromocriptine). Almost all cases can be managed with pill.

Cause: First, find the cause for the hyperprolatinemia. Don't just treat the number. If due to a pituitary growth, a pill can be used to lower it. If the prolactin is high because of side effect of a drug, stopping the drug can normalize your level. Work with your doctor to find the cause. Good luck.
