A member asked:

Can you tell me how to know if my pain meds are causing an allergic reaction?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Symptoms: Opiate containing pain medications such as morphine, percocet, demerol, (meperidine hydrochloride) can cause mast cell degranulation independent of allergy, but leading to allergy symptoms like itch. Medications can cause 2 types of allergy: immediate symptoms upon exposure (such as hives, itch, swelling and systemic allergic symptoms) or delayed symptoms (usually itchy rashes).
