Many ways.: Long Answer. But short answer is genes are activated by environmental factors such as diet, exercise, etc... Genes as those inherited from family can cause certain proteins in the body to work differently than other people. Can cause higher cholesterol, blood pressure... than average population. Cancer happens when more than one genes are damaged from environment and cell cannot self destruct.
