A member asked:

Can you tell me how the toxicity of alcohol compare to that of benzodiazepines?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Alcohol more toxic: Benzodiazepines in high doses will cause sedation and prolonged sleep in otherwise healthy people, but increasing doses of alcohol will cause alcohol poisoning, which is associated with respiratory depression, coma and death. This may occur with benzos in the elderly or people with severe lung disease, or when combined with alcohol. Alcohol damages every organ system in the body, benzos do not.
