Think audience: Think about to whom it is you are trying to explain and fit the explanation to them and the situation. For example, many kids don't understand that autistic youngsters might not get "I don't like that" (too abstract and emotion based) but will understand "Give back the ball." It takes some time and work but a lot of people will welcome understanding how they can talk effectively with your child.
