They work but : only if taken as prescribed and adjusted frequently with the prescribing physician. The major problem is noncompliance with the doctor's orders, not the medicines.

Sometimes : if can take a while to find just the right medication regimen when treating bipolar disorder. May take multiple trials in some cases. It important for both the patient and the doctor to be patient while working it out.
