Can you tell me how heterozygous trait help protect peoole from malaria?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Sickle cell carrier: Someone heterozygous for sickle cell disease carries 1 gene for Hemoglobin S, & a normal gene. So overall, that person doesn't have sickle cell anemia but has some protection against malaria. The reasons may have to do with lower oxygen tensions in the RBCs, which leads to sickling of those parasitized cells that are then removed (along with the parasite). Could be chemical effects too inside RBC.
