Are malaria shots or meds necessary for someone who has sickle cell trait?

Yes: You can't rely on sickle trait protecting you from contracting malaria. If you have sickle cell trait and are traveling to areas where malaria prophylaxis is recommended, you should follow those recommendations as well.

If you mean for...: Travel to an endemic area, then yes. You can't rely solely on sickle cell trait to protect you from exposure/infection. Should discuss this issue with your hematologist and ensure that you have all the cdc recommended immunizations for the area to which you will be traveling.

Yes: In addition to dr. Engel's answer, people with g6pd can not take most anti-malarial meds. Please consult your doctor before travel. Be safe.

Malaria prophylaxis: Having Sickle Cell trait does not prevent one from becoming infected with Malaria. However, it does have protective value in terms of developing illness from P. Falciparum.
