Amputations:: When a surgeon amputates a leg, he knows where all the anatomical structures are and is able to isolate all the large arteries, nerves, muscles, and bones. If they cut above where the extremity was bleeding from they can stop the bleeding by tying the arteries up. In a traumatic leg injury, bleeding can not be stopped in one place because of injury to the tissues and arteries themselves.
