Unlikely....: Symptoms of an asthma exacerbation include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, etc. These symptoms will awaken you or cause you not to be able to fall asleep in the first place. If you experience shortness of breath, see your doctor ASAP or go to the ER.

Wake up then die: Severe asthma attacks can occur any time but especially at night, typically 2-3 am. If nighttime asthma symptoms occur more than 2x a month, then a person's asthma is not controlled. Most asthma deaths that occur are in people who are not taking their daily asthma controller medications, overusing albuterol, psychiatric conditions, and more.
