Esophageal thrush: Typically 'thrush' or candidal infection will melt away when given the right antifungal medication. Sometimes, however, the fungus can be 'resistant' to the first line of treatment. (Just like 'smart' bacteria getting 'round antibiotics). If there isn't a good response within several days, time to think of resistance. Of course correcting the problems that contributed to thrush would help too.

Candidiasis: If you have esophageal candidiasis you must be seen urgently by an infectious diseases expert. This is not a topical, but a systemic condition and suggests some severe predisposing illness which allowed this to occur. Do not delay on this. These organisms can progress from the esophagus into your bloodstream. Go now and be seen and managed.
