"Pins and needles"?: Some synthetic fibers may cause "skin deep" stabbing sensations ("pins and needles"?) Also, look for other possible skin irritants – a specific soap, cosmetics, household sprays, domestic pets. Does your husband have a beard (seriously), or use any skin care products that you may be allergic to?
