Mirena (levonorgestrel) ready?: If Mirena (levonorgestrel) is inserted by your OB gyn within 7 days of the first day of your period, it is usually effective in preventing pregnancy from the day of insertion. Mirena (levonorgestrel) does not protect against STDs, of course, including HIV. If you want to be sure you're protected against unwanted pregnancy, or have any other questions, check with your OB :)
