Mouth breathing: Your throat gets dry if you breath through your mouth at night. If you breath through your nose your mouth can still be open from the retainer causing dryness.

Saliva: We produce twice as much saliva when awake as we do when we are asleep. Couple this with muscles relaxing during sleep, allowing mouth to open, and tissues will dry. Especially problematic if you sleep on your back.
