Relatively safe: If the fentanyl patch was prescribed by your doctor he/she should have properly reviewed any contraindications. Fentanyl is an opioid medication that can cause fatigue and respiratory depression if taken in too high of a dose. 50mcg is usually a safe dose but if combined with another opioid should be used with caution.

Not safe,: when fentanyl patches first came out they were used frequently after surgery and quite effective. But the FDA noted problems and issued a black box warning that restricts use to those already tolerant to narcotics and nothing else works,

High risk: for side effects, abuse and potential serious breathing problems and death. Vomiting, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, or headache, just a few common side effects that may occur. Carefully follow your physician instructions for using fentanyl patches and remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he/she has thought that the benefit to you is greater than the risk.
