Eliminate sugars: Number one would be to reduce sugar intake. This includes high calorie beverages. Soft drinks, sweet tea, frappes, even juice. Water, mineral water (sparkling water) calorie free flavored water (without caffeine). You would also want to avoid high carbohydrate foods. Hydrate with water, as you are improver have small amounts of rice, toast, bland grains and starch in small portions.
