24 hours: I instruct all wisdom tooth extraction patients to return to normal oral hygiene the day after surgery. I recommend that they not use a straw for drinking for 5 days.

As soon as you can: After wisdom tooth surgery, you have pain, restricted opening of the mouth & a swelling. This does not allow you to open the mouth wide enough to place a tooth brush in the mouth to do proper brushing.Once you can open the mouth wide enough, which is usually 2nd or 3rd day, you may use to clean with tooth brush & a paste. You also need to be gentle while brushing.Do not damage surgical site.

Not long: You should be able to brush with toothpaste the next day. Just be careful to avoid the area where the teeth were extracted.
