A member asked:

How could mothers pass mitochondrial disorders onto their children without having it themselves?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Mutations: While the mitochondrial DNA is derived from the mother, it can mutate like other DNA and those mutations may cause problems to the new host. The mitochondria also derive much of their material from proteins encoded by the DNA of the main nucleus, derived from maternal and paternal input. So new mutations of the mitochondrial, or main DNA can all cause new onset disorders.
