A member asked:

I've gotten inherited a mitochondrial disorder from my mother. can i pass this trait on to a son?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: There are >100 different mitochondrial disorders, each with their own unique pattern of inheritance. If the mutation is in mitochondrial dna in a mother, then all of the children will inherit the disease, though the severity can be difficult to predict sometimes. Other mitochondrial disorders are from mutations on "regular" chromosomes, and the patterns of inheritance follow a number of patterns.
